CES: MagicJack Femtocell?

The consumer VoIP company, MagicJack, with a Canada and USA network of PSTN gateways and a USB-based ATA (Analog Terminal Adapter) has helped millions of consumers drop their PSTN line in favor of VoIP at only $19.95/year. At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the company promoted another USB dongle innovation - the MagicJack Femtocell. The AT&T MMS Timeline

So, AT&T - iPhone users now have MMS service, as of Saturday, September 12, 2009 some 2 weeks before the deadline set by the company in a press release only some 9 days beforehand. This gradual momentum for enabling the service begins over six months ago when Brockmann.com published this blog post about how the iPhone is generally considered a laggard device in Japan...

Tripling The iPhone Market Share

With all of the moral energy of the FCC focusing on exclusivity contracts, the device and application approval processes I came across a really interesting factoid about the iPhone experience in France. The Wall Street Journal (subscription required) reported this graph (with my edits) from Bloomberg and Apple showing how the product continues to win fans and accelerate adoption. The big spike in the 4Q of 2008...

Smartphone hardware economics

I came across an interesting article in The Economist highlighting the de-constructing of smartphones. Like all electronics products manufacturers need to know the competitiveness of a new product relative to their own products. Taking a device apart, counting and estimating the cost of its components is becoming an outsourced option from third parties too,...

Unlocking iPhone Travails

I've recently unlocked three 2G iPhone at OS 3.1.2 using a MacBook Pro. I did this because my family are not AT&T customers, and since we're all talking to each other, we need to be on the same network. I don't think this process is all  that helpful to enterprise users since the hassle of unlocking is large enough that it is not scalable for hundreds or thousands of mobile users. The phones got to OS 3.1.2 by 'restoring' the software to factory settings using iTunes 9.0.2. There are two basic...
