Since its initial introduction as recently as March 2009, Samsung has rolled out several improvements to the Samsung Mobile Innovator Windows Mobile SDK and the latest release 1.2.0 has been built with collaboration with Divitas. The SDK provides APIs that enable software features and functionality including unlocking specific capabilities on Samsung devices running Windows Mobile. In particular, the Samsung Epix, Samsung Saga, Samsung Jack and the Samsung Omnia (CDMA) in the U.S. and the Samsung Omnia (GSM) globally. This Windows Mobile-specific SDK complements other developer programs operated by Samsung which include a widget library, app store, Symbian SDK and Java SDK. The Korean manufacturer also plans to release an Android program.
For this latest SDK update, Samsung went to DiVitas and incorporated their advice to make the Windows Mobile on Samsung a mobile UC appropriate platform. Specifically, the collaboration is expected to yield improvements in:
- Audio routing - most other manufacturers (HTC for example) have prevented the earpiece from being activated from the WiFi radio, causing huge inconvenience for users attempting to have a phone conversation over a WiFi interface. This anti-innovation slowed the adoption of mobile UC, specifically mobile VoIP, and prevented the Windows Mobile ecosystem from widespread deployment, despite the fact that Nokia, Palm and Apple devices have no such limitation.
- WiFi performance - knowledge about the performance characteristics of leading enterprise WiFi access points and their support for real-time communications capabilities was shared.
- Battery life - Better understanding of user real-time communications practices makes it easier for device vendors to implement strategies for maximizing scarce resources like onboard battery life.
